The project aims to explore the possibilities of improving efficiency and sustainability of the Pogradec wastewater treatment plant (wwtp) managed by the Albanian partner, the Waterworks Pogradec Enterprise. Based on consultations, the plant faces several technical challenges while the treated water is discharged into Lake Ohrid, a UN natural world heritage site. The water quality of the lake with largely endemic ecosystem, is threatened by eutrophication, while the impact of wwtp is expected to increase as the service network expands. In line with the region's climate protection and sustainability challenges, the applicant has developed a proposal that contributes significantly to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (subobjectives 3, 6, 9, 11, 13 and 15) by serving real regional needs. An in-depth study of the treatment efficiency and operation of the Pogradec wastewater treatment plant is part of the project, where the applicant performs simulation studies with different biokinetic models adapted to the complex biochemical wastewater treatment processes of the plant. Then it makes operational proposals to increase cost-effectiveness and operational safety, as well as the cleaning capacity by 20% in view of the increasing inflow of organic matter due to new connections, building on the benefits of using the smart sensor.
